Aftercare instructions

Following aftercare instructions is imperative for proper healing, and proper healing = the best possible results for your new lip tattoo.

AFTERCARE KITS:

We provide every client with a thoughtfully made, complimentary aftercare kit that includes everything you will need to take care of your lips as they heal (and some fun extras!).

We have very carefully selected these products based on the efficacy of their ingredients, how well they promote healing, and because they do not contain unnecessary filler ingredients, petroleum derived products, chemicals, or other unnatural additives. The products we use are specifically formulated for optimized healing and for your best possible healed results.

PLEASE NOTE: The products in your aftercare kit are to last through the healing of your initial session as well as your touch up. If you run out of product before your lips have healed or before you’ve even had your touch up, you are using too much product!

what to expect:

Expect some swelling immediately after procedure and for up to two days. Some people swell minimally but know some swelling is absolutely normal. Keep the head elevated post procedure to help combat swelling, you can also use Arnica.

If you have lip fillers expect more swelling than those without. This is due to the fact that lip filler (usually comprised of hyaluronic acid) is hydrophilic and holds onto more water than your regular non filled tissue.

Expect flaking, with color coming off with the dry flakes, during days 2 through 6. Keep lips hydrated thoroughly throughout this time with provided balm.

Day of procedure:

Lips will be swollen post treatment. Ice can be used to ease swelling and to prevent bruising. Be sure to use a cloth barrier between the ice pack (a bag of peas works too!) and your lips.

Blot any excess fluid with a tissue or water wipe as it appears/every hour, whichever is more frequent.

Apply aftercare balm often. Do not allow lips to dry out!

Start on Homeopathic Arnica.
Also known as the Mountain Daisy, Arnica Montana has been used for hundreds of years to safely treat bruising and swelling naturally. Ideally you have already begun your arnica supplement the day before treatment, but if you have not yet started, now is the time. Continue to take arnica 5 days post procedure for the best results. Arnica is available in both topical and oral form. We recommend 2 sublingual arnica tablets to be taken three times a day for 5 days.

We do not recommend topical Arnica post treatment, only oral.

day 2-6 (or until flaking stops)

Apply your aftercare balm throughout the day as needed. You want to keep them hydrated with a good coat of healing balm at all times, it is normal for you freshly tattooed lips to feel very dry and a bit swollen still. Do not allow for your lips to become dry, keep the balm with you at all times.

Stay hydrated!

limitations:

  • Do not use any lip makeup for 1 week.

  • Do not pick at your healing lips or peel off any skin. This will cause uneven healed color and poor pigment retention.

  • Avoid spicy foods and menthol products until the chapped flaking phase ends (about 5 days).

  • Avoid UV exposure for 5 days, both natural sun and tanning beds.

  • No foreign body fluids on or around your healing lips for 5 days.

  • Avoid swimming, pools, saunas, lakes, etc, for 5 days following your procedure.

  • Do not exfoliate the lips for 30 days post procedure. This includes both manual exfoliation and chemical exfoliants.

  • Avoid all professional skin treatments for 5 days.

  • Do not exercise for 5-7 days post treatment, or until all peeling of the lips is complete. Physical activity increases your heart rate, blood pressure and blood flow. Minimal blood flow allows damaged capillaries to repair faster. Sweat can also interfere with the healing process and settling of pigment.

extra tips:

  • Prop your head up with a Pillow. When going to bed the evening of your treatment, use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated. This will help to reduce swelling.

  • Apply an extra thick layer of healing balm before showering, brushing teeth and at bedtime.

  • Do not allow lips to become dry. Keep them well moisturized with the provided aftercare balm.

  • Once healed, use SPF! This will help your new lip tattoo last longer and as a generalization, SPF is always a good idea.

KEEP IN MIND: Throughout the healing process the lips will go through 3 phases of color: Too dark, too light, just right. Trust the process, beautiful low maintenance lips are near!
